Suyam is a social voluntary organisation registered in the year 1999. Run by group of youngsters aged below 30 years (providing various service since 1987). Our main focus is on Education, Medical Assistance and Awareness and we group more than 36 types of services in these three main head.

About SIRAGU
(Montessori School)

SIRAGU is a unit of SUYAM, is a montessori school which provides free education to the street children (majority), children from brick chambers and other deprived children. Started in the year June 2003 in a rented roof.

SIRAGU project started when our focus kept on street children living in platforms who were forcefully taken for begging by their parents. After creating awareness among 50 families and our continuous interaction in 4 ½ years, the parents came forward to educate the children and to stop begging. Selected the place which nearby their origin and started the school with 30 children (approx.) in Paalavedupettai Village which is 12km from Avadi junction. Strength of students in September 2004 was 86 students (out of which 40-50 are street children)

In our school there is no reservation to any category of people and all are treated equally and children won’t find difference among themselves but from surroundings, there was always indirect pressure and opposition in educating these special children. But our boat was sailing safely without any difficulty.

Recent Happening - Fire Accident
On 4th September 2004 morning (Saturday) around 2.30 a.m., one neighbour saw the smoke was coming out from thatched roof of our school. Front portion of the school wherein office room, store room, meeting hall, library & TV room & music player room was situated was covered under thatched roof was fully burnt though the fire engines and village people tried to put off the fire.

We suspect some body intentionally done this cruel attempt. Before we (trustees) reach the school by 4.30am entire portions were burnt and nothing was recoverable and the estimated material loss is around 4 lakhs but cannot estimate the hardwork put in and efforts taken. No injuries to anybody, only the material loss. We have lodged police complaint and investigation yet to be commenced.

Immediate Step
Every time we fell down, our courage and confidence bring us up. Though there was huge damage and we are emotionally disturbed, we stood up with self confidence and we don’t want to stop the school even for a day. Sunday is the next day of fire accident is an holiday and Monday was Gokulastami is an holiday. Within these two days we have set right the situation and shifted our school to another rented building which is newly built in MELAPPEDU village which is 6km from Tiruninravur Railway Station in Chennai. Moreover, another school was functioning in that area was about to close due to thatched roof condition and many other reasons, we have taken over the school with 70 students and 6 staff.

As per our target date being 7th Sep (Tuesday) the school started once again with 140 students without any absence of either students or staff and the present strength is 180 children with 15 teaching and non teaching staff.

Short Term Plan
The school will run under this present rented premises for another 6 months and we manage the situation with available environment and with available facilities.

Long Term Plan
Never think about impossible. Kept a target period of 6 months and within which we need to acquire a minimum of 1 acre land and construct the building to accommodate minimum of 200 students in primary and pre-primary level education.

Immediate Requirement
6 months from 07.09.04 is our target period and within which we would like to move to our own building. Presently we are aiming on atleast 50cents of land to construct primary level school. For which, we need all your financial support to acquire a land which would costs Rs.4,00,000.00 for 50 cents.

Cheque or DD in favour of SUYAM CHARITABLE TRUST payable at Chennai for the donors inside India.

For donors in outside India can contribute through their bank account to our bank account in Chennai (fully permissible as we are registered under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act).

Your support other than financial:

a) Contribute your donation in kind (all required to run a school & toys, TV and music system)

b) Nutritious powder and other eatables to provide evening snacks to all the children to cure the vitamin deficiency.

c) Provisions (Rice, Oil, Dhall and others) to feed 20 inmates fully adopted and taken care.
